SOI leaders demand central university status for PU

Student Organisation of India (SOI) workers on Saturday submitted a memorandum to human resource development minister Smriti Irani, urging her to give central university status for Panjab University (PU).

Student Organisation of India (SOI) workers on Saturday submitted a memorandum to human resource development minister Smriti Irani, urging her to give central university status for Panjab University (PU).

The delegation was led by senior SOI leader Vicky Middukhera.

The memorandum stated that PU was one of the oldest universities in India and had emerged as the number one university in the country in the Times Higher Education ranking released last year.

"Centralisation of this university will provide good exposure to students and will largely contribute towards good research, which will help in development of the country. Fees will go down, especially in self financed courses,” the memorandum read.

The SOI leaders claimed that the HRD minister had assured that she would look into the matter and take a decision at the earliest.
