In fact, the students are getting everything matching, from school bags to water bottles and pencil boxes. These bags, which cost anywhere between Rs 1,500 and Rs 9,000 of different brands, are most sought-after by students.
If city shopkeepers dealing in stationary and schoolbags are to be believed, mostly the bags priced between Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000 are in demand.
Keeping in view the comfort of children, bags now come with added features like back pads, inbuilt bladders that can hold up to two litres of water, attached hoods, separate section to keep sports shoes wherein they do not come in contact with books and an attached net to carry football. Earlier, satchel-type horizontal school bags were in vogue, but nowadays bags come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. One of the most preferred bags are vertical rucksack bags.
Trolley bags are famous among schoolchildren, which come with soft handles and alloy rods to add comfort for the student. Mala Walia, a housewife, said, "I don't want my seven-year-old daughter to carry heavy bags on her shoulders. So, I have opted for trolley bags."
A visit to different city shops offering classy and branded schoolbags revealed that those sporting popular cartoon characters like Barbie dolls, Mickey Mouse etc as well as those of international brands are most preferred by students.
Tarun Kukreja, a businessman from Sector 17, said, "Attractive schoolbags are in vogue at present. The smallest bags are meant for playway schoolchildren, with inbuilt bladder and an attachment for sippers. These cost approximately Rs 1,500. Bags are also available at the higher end too."
Varuna Bedi, a housewife, said, "My both children are fascinated with cartoon characters and I end up buying schoolbags accordingly for them. Also, branded bags with matching accessories show the purchase power of the family."

Bags come with padded backs, separate section for sports shoes etc. Some bags have additional section to carry football.
Bags also have inbuilt bladder to hold water up to two litres and the child can drink with an attached sipper
Trolley bags come with soft handles, so as to prevent pressure on hands of students while pulling. These bags also have alloy rods.
Play school and kindergarten bags range between Rs 600 and Rs 1,500. The bags in bright pink, yellow and blue shades have cartoon characters imprinted on them.
Bags for middle and senior schoolchildren come in the price range of Rs 1,500 to Rs 9,000 and are of international brands offering separate sections for laptops and ipads. Matching bottles, tiffins and pencil boxes are also being offered at shops.
School do not want to intervene
School authorities do not want to intervene in the choice of bags and other paraphernalia used by students. "Why should we be interfering, if parents are not objecting?" they argue.
