The so-called “mute spectator” in the Sucha Singh murder case recorded his statement before the magistrate on Wednesday.
Anil Kumar, the UT police constable posted as a security guard in the old district courts, sector 17, is touted as one of the most important witnesses in the case.
Anil Kumar's statement is crucial as he was on duty at the old district courts building in Sector 17 on the night, when inspector Sucha Singh was done to death by the dismissed UT cop, Basant Kumar alias Bunty (26), on the intervening night of June 7 and June 8.
Basant, along with his lady love Sarita, had murdered inspector Sucha Singh while on the run after he committed a double murder in Sonepat.
Basant had murdered Sarita's husband and mother-in-law on April 18 and were on the run since then. They were to catch a bus from sector 17 on June 7 night, when inspector Sucha Singh along with home guard volunteer Jatinder Singh on night patrolling questioned them as to why were they roaming about so late at night. Since they had failed to give any satisfactory answer, Sucha Singh had asked them to sit in the police van to go to the police post.
Irked over being asked to move to the police station Bunty allegedly attacked the inspector and killed him.
Constable Anil Kumar, who had joined the police force about two years ago, was standing at a stone's throw from the spot, where Basant stabbed the inspector to death. Basant threatened Anil Kumar and even tried to jump over the railing to stab him as well.
Sources revealed that Anil Kumar stated that he saw Basant stabbing inspector Sucha Singh a number of times and even tried to climb the railing of the old district courts complex in Sector 17 to scare him, threatening to stab him as well.
When Bunty attacked inspector Sucha Singh, home guard volunteer Jatinder Singh, had called out to constable Anil Kumar to fire as he was on duty inside the district courts building.
But, instead of firing he went inside the court complex “to seek help”. By the time he returned, Basant had escaped with Sarita in the police van leaving Sucha Singh in a pool of blood.
He received a lot of flak for this and was even sent to the police lines for failing to provide help to the inspector and home guard, as he ran inside reportedly to seek “help” after he was threatened by Basant.
Significantly, while Basant threatened the constable with a sharp-edged weapon in his hand, constable Anil Kumar had an official weapon. Basant threatened the constable that he (Basant) would climb the iron gate, which was locked from inside of the premises and stab him (the constable).
The 57-year-old inspector, Sucha Singh, who was due to retire on January 31, 2014, was done to death by Bunty on the intervening night of June 7-June 8. Basant and Sarita, arrested from Delhi, are in judicial custody at present.
