Sukhbir clears robotic car parking for all MC towns

Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday cleared multi-level robotic car parking system in congested commercial areas of all municipal corporation towns.

Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday cleared multi-level robotic car parking system in congested commercial areas of all municipal corporation towns.

Accompanied by local bodies minister Chunni Lal Bhagat, Sukhbir reviewed the infrastructure requirements of various local bodies and asked secretary, local government, Ashok Gupta, to go for an international meeting on setting up robotic car parking system in all corporation cities.

"Parking problem is peculiar to the state with Punjab having the maximum vehicle density on roads. In a fast-growing economy, infrastructure has to keep pace with development," said Sukhbir.

He instructed all municipal commissioners to identify suitable locations for setting up multi-level car parking, and asked secretary of the department to submit a proposal by Monday.

Taking a serious note of the vehicles parked illegally by the roadside and in commercial areas, Sukhbir instructed the DGP to strictly toe away wrongly-parked vehicles.

Asking the local bodies to make sufficient parking area as a mandatory part of their building plan, Sukhbir said it was imperative for local bodies and housing departments to ensure compliance of these instructions.

Earlier, a consultant engaged by the government gave a presentation on the robotic car parking.

What is robotic parking?

Explaining the system of robotic parking, an official said vehicles would be received at the entrance by parking attendants and shifted to the available space with the help of a conveyor belt controlled by a robot. A similar kind of parking system is functional in Hyderabad. It will be a multi-level underground parking.
