Police claim to have arrested eight more accused in the Shruti abduction case. Bathinda inspector general of police (IGP) Nirmal Singh Dhillon claimed this at a press conference here on Wednesday.
“We have arrested eight more people who in some way or the other were involved in the crime, such as covering the area surrounding the girl’s house at Dogar Basti, planning the abduction, and conspiring and executing it.”
With Wednesday’s arrests, the number of those nabbed has reached 13. Of them, 11 have been arrested in the past three days following public outrage and political pressure after the inept handling of the case by the police, which had initially tried to project it as a case of elopement.
Dhillon said all the eight arrested — Harpreet Singh, Sunny Ganga, Sahil Sekha, Rahul Sharma, Amanpreet, Aman Kumar, Amandeep Singh and Gurdeep Singh — have a criminal past. They already had a few cases registered against them, he added. “The conspiracy has become clear with the arrest of Rajwinder Singh Ghali who was arrested from Hardoi in Uttar Pardesh,” the IG said.
“The accused had tried to abduct the girl on September 22, two days before the actual abduction. But they failed in their bid as the family did not answer the door,” the IG said.
“The main accused, Nishan Singh, Ghali, Narinder Dhalla and Toofan Singh, reached here from Moga on September 24 and abducted Shruti from her house with the help of others. We have already arrested Dhalla and Ghali,” said Dhillon.
Dhillon said Ghali was the one who opened fire before leading the victim to the car by brandishing the pistol that they had recovered from him. Ater the abduction, the accused drove to Moga via Kotkapura, Dhillon said, adding that then they dispersed from there leaving Nishan and Shruti, who boarded a bus.
Criminals roam free
Ghali, according to police record, has 10 cases against him, seven of them of serious nature, including murder and attempt to murder. The murder case was registered against him at Bhagta Bhai Ka police station in Bathinda. A case against him was registered at Ferozepur and eight in Faridkot. Ghali’s arrest has led to many vital clues,
said IGP Dhillon.
Of 13 arrested, 11 from Faridkot
All the eight arrested on Wednesday belong to Faridkot. All three arrested on Monday also belonged to Faridkot. Of the 13 arrested so far, 11 belong to Faridkot and the number would go up with the arrest of three others, including Nishan Singh.
