With no checks, illegal markets among city’s filthiest spots
Set up against the backdrop of a smelly drain with stagnant water, and with chickens cramped in cages enveloped by flies, the illegal meat market at Phase-1 of the Industrial Area is probably the dirtiest place in the city. Dogs also roam around here freely looking for a meal.

There over 10 shops here. Sethi, a leader among the vendors, said the remains after slaughtering are removed by a sweeper. However, the vendors have no solution for the problem of flies.
The illegal market at Majri Chowk market is no different with flies swarming, dogs roaming and and the place smelling. There are about 15 shops selling chicken, mutton and fish. Of these, about 10 of them are located near the civic body’s garbage picking point, where a large pile of junk lies.
A puddle of water stretches across four shops. And in these shops, carcasses are hung covered in fabric to protect them from flies. But, none of the shops have a dustbin. Health department officials said they checked the meat which sold at authorised shops, but not those sold on the roadside.
