Tension prevailed at Tanda after the carcasses were found near the Cholang railway crossing. The suspects had removed the edible portions of the cattle and dumped the remaining parts. Chief minister-designate Bhagwant Mann had ordered the director-general of police (DGP) to get a thorough probe conducted.
Three of the arrested persons are the main accused who stole, transported and slaughtered the cattle while the rest provided them shelter. All accused belong to Jalandhar district. They have been identified as Sawan, Satpal, Surjit Lal, Jeewan Ali, Kamaljeet Kaur, Salma and Anwar Hussain. The police have also recovered the canter and sharp-edged weapons used in the crime.
Hoshiarpur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dhruman H Nimbale said the main accused, Surjit, already had three cases of cow slaughter registered against him in Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. He revealed that the cattle were smuggled from different places and slaughtered in Tanda.
“Their modus operandi was such that they would gather stray cattle and then bring them together at a barren place for killing. They would remove the beneficial parts of the animals and sell them at different places,” said the SSP.
“Some unknown person had spotted the accused butchering the cows in the night and had warned them, but did not inform the police. Had we been alerted on time, we could have saved at least some of the bovines and arrested the culprits red-handed,” he added.
He said the canter in which the cattle were transported belonged to Surjit. “The accused are being interrogated for further details. The railway police are also helping in the investigation,” the SSP said.
