Auto hit by truck overturns in Kharar, 72-year-old woman, son killed

Mother-son duo, both migrant labourers, had hired the auto to travel from Anandpur Sahib to Kharar; truck driver arrested

A 72-year-old woman and her son were killed, while their auto-rickshaw driver and other passengers had a narrow escape, after a truck hit the three-wheeler near Swara village in Kharar on Saturday.

The deceased, Surajwati, and her son Mahipal, 51, hailed from Uttar Pradesh and lived in Rupnagar, where they worked as labourers.

Investigating officer Kulwinder Singh said the mother-son duo had hired the auto-rickshaw to travel from Anandpur Sahib to Kharar.

When they reached near Swara village around 3pm, a speeding truck hit the auto-rickshaw from behind. The impact of the collision caused the three-wheeler to overturn, killing Surajwati on the spot. Mahipal later succumbed to his injuries at the civil hospital in Phase 6, Mohali, while others, including the driver, escaped with minor injuries.

The truck driver, Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Mullanpur, Mohali, was arrested.

He has been booked under Sections 304-A (causing death by negligence), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sadar Kharar police station.

DAV student dies as bike rams into Chandigarh house

Chandigarh A 21-year-old student of DAV College, Sector 10, was killed as the motorcycle that he was riding pillion on rammed into a house’s gate in Sector 23 in the wee hours of Saturday.

Police said Puroo Verma, a resident of Sector 23, was an MSc student at the college. The bike rider, Parash Khatar , 19, of Jind, Haryana, escaped with injuries.

Police received information that a man was lying on the road near the Sanatan Dharam Mandir in Sector 23 around 3.30 am. On reaching the scene, they found two injured youths and a motorcycle that had crashed into the gate of a house, damaging it. No helmet was found.

Both youths were taken to GMSH, Sector 16, where Verma was declared dead. Police have collected blood samples to test if they were driving under the influence of liquor. A case has been registered.
