Chandigarh: 3,049 patients attended at PGI’s Advanced Cardiac Centre’s emergency care
The centre is a 210-bedded facility, including a 46-bed cardiac surgery unit and three cardiac catheterisation laboratories, catering to a large number of critical heart patients
A total of 3049 patients have been attended so far in a dedicated cardiac emergency started in March 2026 at the Advanced Cardiac Centre of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
Earlier, cardiac patients were rushed to the main emergency in Nehru block and used to be later transferred to the Advanced Cardiac Centre, but with emergency care available in Advanced Cardiac Centre, treatment accessibility has increased, providing immediate care.
Unlike the advanced paediatric centre and advanced eye centre, the Advanced Cardiac Centre, established in 2009, did not have an exclusive emergency wing. Cardiac patients were first received at the main general emergency at Nehru hospital, before being referred to the specialised facility, often leading to delays in time-sensitive cases.
The centre is a 210-bedded facility, including a 46-bed cardiac surgery unit and three cardiac catheterisation laboratories, catering to a large number of critical heart patients from across the region.
The unit facilitated 26 primary PCI procedures, enabling timely revascularisation for patients requiring urgent cardiac intervention. The patient load has steadily increased with weekly volumes rising from around 100 patients in March to over 200 patients by July, the overall mortality remained low at 0.5%, with 16 deaths recorded during the reporting period
Director, PGIMER, Dr Vivek Lal said “The dedicated Cardiology Triage Unit is an important step towards strengthening specialised emergency care at PGIMER. Its success lies not merely in the number of patients managed, but in creating a structured pathway through which patients can be rapidly assessed and directed to the level of care they actually require.”
