Chitra alleges ‘pick-and-choose’ during Ambala Cantt demolition drive

Days after the municipal council (MC) of Sadar zone carried out an extensive anti-encroachment drive in market areas of Ambala Cantonment, Aam Aadmi Party’s state vice-president Chitra Sarwara on Monday met deputy commissioner (DC) Dr Shaleen and accused MC authorities of “pick and choose”.
During her meeting with the DC, Sarwara alleged that no time or notices were given to the aggrieved parties during the drives that were carried out last week.
“Three months back a similar drive was carried out in the markets in the name of pipelines, and ramps were bulldozed. As no relief was given, owners repaired the ramps on their own,” the leader said.
She also added that Cantonment was a well-planned city settled by the Britishers and there were platforms outside every house and shops. The leader sought relief to the shopkeepers in view of the floods and upcoming festivals. She also demanded immediate repairs given the ongoing monsoon season.
During the drive on August 3, MC officials, including executive officer Jarnail Singh and secretary Rajesh Kumar, had to face the wrath of the shopkeepers.
The secretary had then said nobody will be allowed to encroach roads and the markets were being beautified.
