Congress workers staged a protest march in Rohtak on Friday against the reported washing and purification of the venue of Congress president and senior Dalit leader Mallikarjun Kharge’s programme with Ganga water in Haldwani of BJP ruled Uttarakhand.

The demonstration, organised on the call of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee was led by former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The protesters marched from the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Model Town, where they held a Satyagraha and raised slogans against the BJP.

Addressing the gathering, Hooda said the incident was not merely an insult to Kharge but to “crores of Dalits, marginalised people and all those who believe in the Constitution”. He alleged that the incident reflected the BJP’s “narrow and divisive mindset” and demanded registration of an FIR and legal action against those responsible.

Rohtak MLA Bharat Bhushan Batra said the alleged purification of the venue reflected an attempt to undermine the spirit of equality. He also highlighted unemployment, inflation and civic issues such as roads, sewerage and waterlogging in Rohtak.
