“Navjot Singh Sidhu has been admitted to the hepatology ward, NHE, due to liver related problems and requires further evaluation. He has been kept under observation and is stable now,” Dr Virender Singh, head of hepatology department, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), said in a statement.

Cricketer-turned-politician Sidhu was first taken for consultation to the medical officer of the Patiala jail after he complained of stomach pain, who further referred him to PGI.

“Sidhu first visited PGI at 9 am on Monday and got consultation in the hepatology department. After undergoing a series of medical tests, he left the hospital at 10:30 am. However, he then again visited the hospital at 2 pm, after which he was admitted by the doctors,” said hospital sources.

The senior doctors of the department said that Sidhu had pulmonary embolism in 2009. The department is conducting several medical tests, including those for liver cirrhosis, after which doctors will decide on the treatment regimen.

In 2015, Sidhu also underwent treatment for acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) at a hospital in Delhi. DVT is caused by a blood clot in a deep vein which hinders the normal blood flow.

As per doctors, Sidhu’s health needs to be closely monitored as a clot can form in his lungs, causing more serious complications.

The former Punjab Congress chief was on May 20 sent to Patiala central jail after the Supreme Court sentenced him to one-year rigorous imprisonment in the 1988 road rage death case.

About two weeks back, he was taken to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for medical examination, following which a special diet was recommended for him due to his multiple medical conditions, including pulmonary embolism and liver ailment.
