Congress MP from Ludhiana Ravneet Singh Bittu on Tuesday received a threat call on his official number, saying that he will meet the same fate as singer Sidhu Moose Wala.

Bittu’s personal assistant (PA) Harjinder Singh Dhindsa reportedly attended the call, which was made through WhatsApp using a foreign number. The MP was not available as he is travelling abroad.

Bittu is the grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh who was assassinated in 1995. Moose Wala was shot dead in Mansa on May 29. Even actor Salman Khan and his father Salim Khan had received a similar threat letter in Mumbai on Sunday.

Dhindsa, in his complaint to Ludhiana police commissioner Kaustubh Sharma, said the first call was received at 9:08 am. When he told the caller that the MP was not available, the caller started issuing threats stating that Bittu will be killed as he had been speaking against Khalistan and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

“At around 9:18 am, the caller made a group call on WhatsApp in which some local Hindu leaders and farmer leaders were also included. The caller started issuing threats, following which I disconnected the call. I informed the MP about the calls, who asked me to file a police complaint,” said the PA.

The police commissioner said Bittu’s PA had visited his office and made a verbal complaint. Police are trying to trace the caller and have asked Dhindsa to lodge a written complaint. Kaustubh Sharma said some fraudsters have also been making such calls these days, and the matter will be probed.

After Moose Wala’s murder, for which the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and their Canada-based accomplice Goldy Brar have claimed responsibility, some traders in Ludhiana’s Khanna and Jagraon have also received extortion calls in the name of Brar. However, police are probing the veracity of these claims.
