A Mohali court dismissed the bail application of a vigilance inspector, who was arrested for accepting a bribe of 5,000 on November 1, on Wednesday.

The accused, Amolak Singh, was arrested on the complaint of one Prabhmesh Mohan, a resident of New Mohindra Colony, Amritsar.

The complainant, who submitted that he hand his wife, an employee of the Amritsar municipal corporation were arrested in a corruption case in 2021 and were out on bail, uploaded a video of the accused demanding bribe from him on the Vigilance Bureau’s (VB’s) online complaint number.

Mohan told the VB that on October 29, the accused called him through WhatsApp and asked him to reach the VB office the next day at 11 am. “I was sure that the inspector would seek graft from me, which is why I recorded the interaction. Singh told me that the VB requires my voice samples, and moreover a copy of the FIR registered against me was to be translated in English, which would cost around 3,000. He also sought money for sending the voice sample to the laboratory,” said the complainant.

He alleged that the inspector sought 10,000 from him, and asked him to pay a first instalment of 5,000. He promised to pay the money on November 1, when the accused was caught red-handed.

A case was registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
