Haryana: Over ₹10-cr recovered, 489 cases settled, says enforcement bureau in drive against power theft

Haryana State Enforcement Bureau (HSEB) on Sunday said that during a drive to settle power theft cases ₹10.3 crore was recovered and 489 power theft cases were disposed of.
The state enforcement bureau set up in 2023 is a specialised wing of Haryana Police that deals with illegalities such as power theft, environmental violations, and illegal mining.
The month-long special drive launched on July 17 against power theft resulted in the highest recovery of ₹3.04 crore in Gurugram where 115 cases were also disposed of.
According to the director general of police (DGP-HSEB) Navdeep Singh Virk, the objective of the drive was to ensure speedy disposal of power theft cases and effective recovery of government revenue. “Under the drive, significant success was achieved across the state between July 17 and August 17, in disposing of power theft cases and recovering outstanding dues,” he said, adding that during the campaign, a total of 489 power theft cases were disposed of and ₹10.3 crore was recovered.
“The achievement reflects the bureau’s commitment to expediting the disposal of pending cases, taking effective enforcement action and safeguarding government revenue.”
In a statement, the HSEB said that in Faridabad 54 cases were disposed of and ₹1.2 crore was recovered, while 14 cases in Palwal resulted in a recovery of over ₹42 lakh and 14 cases in Nuh yielded about ₹23 lakh. Under the Gurugram division, about ₹48 lakh was recovered from 22 cases in Mahendragarh and over ₹57 lakh from 25 cases in Rewari.
Similarly, under the Ambala division, ₹40 lakh was recovered from 23 cases in Ambala, over ₹25 lakh from 12 cases in Kurukshetra, ₹13 lakh from five cases in Panchkula and about ₹4 lakh from five cases in Yamunanagar. In the Hisar division, about ₹32 lakh was recovered from 12 cases in Fatehabad, ₹26 lakh from 12 cases in Jind, about ₹43 lakh from 23 cases in Hisar and over ₹30 lakh from 19 cases in Sirsa.
In the Karnal division, ₹24 lakh was recovered in 16 cases, ₹49 lakh from 23 cases in Panipat and ₹13 lakh from eight cases in Kaithal. In the Rohtak division, over ₹26 lakh was recovered in 17 cases in Jhajjar, about ₹91 lakh in 14 cases of Charkhi Dadri, ₹30 lakh from 20 cases in Rohtak, about ₹33 lakh from 18 cases in Sonepat and over ₹32 lakh from 18 cases in Bhiwani.
Additional director general of police (ADGP) Ravi Kiran said that power theft has wider economic implications and requires sustained enforcement. “Power theft is not merely a social issue but also an economic crime,” he said, pointing out that power theft puts additional burden on consumers who pay their electricity bills honestly.
The ADGP said that while strengthening enforcement against power theft, special emphasis is being laid on the speedy resolution of pending cases.
