A 41-year-old man was arrested on Sunday for attempting to extort 25 lakh from a trader by posing as an aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The accused has been identified as Harmel Singh, a resident of Talwan village in Jalandhar. His aide, who is yet to be arrested, worked at a showroom in Veer Nagar owned by the victim, Vishant Jain of Surya Vihar, a garments trader. He told police in his complaint that he had received the extortion call on December 8.

Sub-inspector Dilbag Singh said that a case has been registered under Sections 384 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code at Division Number 4 police station.
