Mercury drops below 12°C again in Chandigarh

After remaining over 12°C for two days, the city’s maximum temperature once again dropped to 11.5°C on Tuesday

After remaining over 12°C for two days, the city’s maximum temperature once again dropped to 11.5°C on Tuesday.

Between January 4 and 7, the maximum temperature had steadily decreased from 11.9°C to 11.1°C, before it rose to 12.5°C on January 8 and further to 14.4°C on January 9.

However, due to foggy and cloudy weather in the city on Tuesday, it once again dipped to 11.5°C. Due to the dense fog, visibility dropped to 25 metres in the morning.

Tuesday’s maximum temperature was 8.9 degrees below normal, making it a “severe cold day”. A severe cold day is declared when the minimum temperature drops below 10°C and the maximum temperature is more than 6.5 degrees below normal. Since January 2, every day this year has been a “severe cold day”, except for January 9 that was declared a “cold day” by IMD.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature rose slightly from 7.7°C on Monday to 7.8°C on Tuesday, 2.5 degrees above normal. Over the next three days, the day temperature will remain between 14°C and 15°C, while the night temperature will hover around 8°C.

Rain expected from tonight

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), as a Western Disturbance is active over the region, there are chances of light rain in the city from Wednesday night onwards.

Due to this, fog formation may be affected on Wednesday and Thursday, but it can be expected again from Friday onwards.

Morning Shatabdi arrives seven hours late

Meanwhile, the dense fog continued to disrupt air and railway operations.

As many as four trains arrived late at the Chandigarh railway station, including the morning Shatabdi Express from Delhi and the Chandigarh-Howrah train that were both over seven hours late.

Nine flights cancelled, 39 delayed

In continued disruptions at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, nine flights were cancelled and 39 departed and arrived late on Tuesday. While 25 of these flights were outgoing, 14 were incoming.

The cancelled flights included three to and from Bengaluru, two to and from Delhi, three to Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Dharamshala, and one from Lucknow.

While just 33 overs could be bowled in Mohali during the game between Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, mere three overs were bowled in Chandigarh during the tie involving hosts Chandigarh and Vidrabha.
