The deceased was identified as Sukhwinder Singh alias Shinda of Veinpuin village. Police have booked five persons, including two by name, on the complaint of the deceased’s son. The identified accused Akashdeep Singh, and his father Dalbir Singh, are from the same village.

The incident took place at around 8:30 pm when Shinda, along with his son Nishan Singh, was on the way to attend a programme at Shivala Temple in the village, according to the first information report (FIR) registered at Goindwal Sahib police station.

“On Tuesday night, I along with my father were going to attend a programme at Shivala Temple in the village. When we reached near Janjh Ghar (building reserved for accommodating marriage parties), at around 8:30 pm, we saw accused Akashdeep Singh, who was carrying a pistol, Dalbir Singh and two unidentified persons standing in the Janjh Ghar,” said Nishan, who works as a labourer.

The complainant added, “As soon as Dilbagh noticed us, he started shouting to his fellow men to attack us. Immediately after hearing this, Akashdeep opened fire from his pistol, and a bullet hit my father in his head. My father fell to the ground. Akashdeep fired again aiming his gun at me, but luckily the bullet graced my head. As I raised the alarm, the accused fled from the spot.”

Nishan said, “In the meantime, my paternal uncle Gurnam Singh reached the spot and rushed my father to Tarn Taran civil hospital. The doctor declared my father brought dead. I was also given first aid at the hospital.”

Nishan has told in his statement that a few days ago, he had a minor scuffle with accused Akashdeep. “After the scuffle, Akashdeep threatened to kill me and my family,” he added.

On Nishan’s statement, a case under Sections 302 (murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 148 (rioting, armed with a deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 25 of the Arms Act was registered against Akashdeep, his father and three unidentified persons at Goindwal Sahib police station.
