Panchkula woman calls helpline no. and then loses ₹ 30,000

A 62-year-old woman filed a police complaint on Wednesday alleging that she was cheated of 30,000 by some unidentified person on the pretext of helping her stop the installment of her insurance.

The complainant Rajnish Tiwari is resident of Sector 21, Panchkula. She told the police that she had taken insurance from TATA AIG and to stop the installments, she called one helpline number only to later realise that she was duped.

“When I dialled helpline number, the caller told me that he will call from another number and in the meantime, he asked me to download an app. The moment I downloaded the app, the phone got hacked and over 30,997 amounts were deducted from the account,” she stated in the FIR.

“Even on Wednesday, the hacker called me asking why I was registering a complaint and messaged “balance debit hua kya?,” the statement further read.

A case was registered under sections 420 (Cheating and there by dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code.
