A policeman allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at a court complex in Doda district late on Sunday, officials said.

The deceased was identified as special police officer (SPO) Gurmesh Singh, 46, of Gandoh in Doda district.

“He was on guard duty at the Doda sessions court. Late on Sunday, he allegedly shot himself dead,” they said.

The bullet had pierced through his chest, killing him instantly, they added. As per officials, preliminary investigations suggested that he used his service weapon.

The body was sent to the district hospital for postmortem examination and the police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
