Post Covid, drunk driving nakas resume in Chandigarh; 13 booked

After withdrawing drunk driving nakas amid the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the Chandigarh Traffic Police have returned on city roads with alcometers to rein in drunk driving in the run up to the year-end parties in the city.

On Friday night, Chandigarh Traffic Police laid four such check posts on different locations in the city and booked 13 people for drunk driving and also impounded eight vehicles.

The staff at the nakas have been instructed to put on face masks and follow the safety guidelines. With PGIMER writing to the traffic to discontinue use of alcometers, where multiple people blow into the same mouthpiece, the cops will be looking for the smell of alcohol and observing the behaviour of drivers before taking them for medical examination in case of suspected drunk driving.

Before Covid, the traffic police would gear up with drunk driving nakas around the year-end in the wake of late-night parties and foggy conditions as well that lead to a spike in fatal accidents around this time of the year.
