Rahul Gandhi embarks on Punjab leg of Bharat Jodo Yatra with Golden Temple visit

After spending two hours at Sikh shrine, Congress leader heads for Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district for overnight stay

After completing the Haryana leg of his Bharat Jodo Yatra, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi paid obeisance at Golden Temple before embarking on the march in the border state of Punjab on Tuesday afternoon.

Punjab Congress leaders Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa accompanied him as he paid obeisance at the Sikh shrine.

Earlier, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh tweeted, “Day 116 -- #BharatJodoYatra finishes Haryana leg in Ambala now. 2mrw morning is Punjab leg. There can be no better way to begin that than with a pilgrimage to the holiest Golden Temple in Amritsar. There’ll be no padyatra this afternoon so that @RahulGandhi can pay his respects there.”

Gandhi landed at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport in Amritsar around noon from where he will went to Golden Temple. He spent about two hours there before leaving for Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib district for an overnight stay.

Addressing a press conference in Ambala, Ramesh said that there will be no padyatra in Punjab after 1pm on January 12 and 13 also in view of the Lohri celebrations. The yatra will resume on January 14 and Gandhi will address a press conference in Jalandhar on January 15.

Gandhi started out on the yatra from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on September 7. It will conclude in Srinagar on January 30 with him hoisting the national flag.
