Rape, harassment cases saw 11.5% rise in Mohali in 2022

In total, 3,915 criminal cases were reported from Mohali in 2022, compared to 4,346 in 2021.

However, despite strict laws aimed towards curbing crimes against women, a total of 84 rape cases were reported from Mohali in 2022, compared to 77 in 2021. Police also registered six attempt to rape cases, compared to two in 2021.

A total of 36 men were booked for using criminal force against women and intending to outrage their modesty last year, compared to 34 in 2021. Meanwhile, 130 cases under Section 498-A (husband or the relative of the husband of a woman, subjects such woman to cruelty) of Indian Penal Code were registered in Mohali in 2022, compared to 118 such cases in 2021.

Other than this, cases under Section 377 (unnatural offences) of IPC also witnessed a rise, with a total 10 such cases registered last year in Mohali, against two in 2021. However, kidnapping of women saw a dip, as 115 women were abducted last year, compared to 211 in 2021.

A senior police officer, on condition of anonymity, said that most of these abducted women had eloped with their male friends, but kidnapping cases were registered after receiving complaints from their families.

Mohali senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sandeep Kumar Garg said the main reason behind the increase in number of cases pertaining to crime against women is that victims now have developed faith in police and law. “Victims now feel comfortable in sharing their trauma with police and thus reporting of such cases have increased. We won’t spare anyone involved in crimes against women. Women should also take all possible precautions.”

Decline in murders, thefts

Meanwhile, significant decline was witnessed in murder and attempt to murder cases last year. As many as 32 murders were reported in 2021, compared to 20 in 2022; and 36 attempt to murder cases were registered here in 2021 compared to 23 in 2022.

Also, 10 cases of culpable homicide were registered last year compared to four cases in 2021.

While four cases of dacoity were reported last year compared to two cases registered in 2021; nine cases were registered in Mohali in 2022 as compared to total 11 robberies in 2021.

“We managed to nab all the robbers, especially the carjackers who tried to hamper the law and order here. CCTV cameras played a vital role in it. We are going to install 5,000 cameras across the district and already we have installed 400 new ones in key areas. We now aim to further reduce the crime rate in the district for which we are increasing manpower, presence of PCRs and regular night patrolling,” added SSP Garg.

However, a total of 212 burglaries were reported last year as compared to 207 in 2021. Mohali police also succeeded to curb snatchings, as 106 snatchings were reported last year as compared to 173 in 2021.

Moreover, a total of 18 extortion cases were registered in 2022 as compared to 12 in 2021 and 64 people were grievously hurt last year when 54 such cases were registered in 2021. Mohali police also registered 392 drugs cases against 257 in 2021.

Mohali also witnessed a rocket propelled grenade attack on the intelligence headquarters building here, following which a case under Explosive Act was registered at Sohana police station.
