The high court has granted anticipatory bail to nihang Aman Singh, an accused in gruesome murder at Singhu border on October 15, at farmers’ protest site.

Singh had approached the high court seeking bail on December 23 arguing that the alleged occurrence was videographed by some witnesses and initially, accused Sarabjit Singh was arrested for murder and subsequently, three more persons – Bhagwant Singh, Govindpreet Singh and Narain Singh – were indicted as accused. The offence punishable under Section 34 (act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code was later substituted with Sections 148 (rioting) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object).
The petitioner was neither present at the spot nor is seen in the video footage and has been falsely implicated on the basis of disclosure statement made by other co-accused persons, it was claimed.
The high court bench of justice Manoj Bajaj on Wednesday granted interim protection from arrest asking him to join the investigation and remain present as and when called by the police. The matter has been posted for further hearing on July 11.
Lakhbir, 35, who was a daily wager, was brutally murdered by a group of persons at the Delhi border in the early hours on October 15. His mutilated body was found tied to a police barricade near the farmers’ protest site.
Lakhbir was allegedly lynched for desecrating a Sikh holy book. A video on the social media showed a man wearing the blue robe, claiming responsibility of the murder, adding that he “punished” Lakhbir for desecrating Guru Granth Sahib.
