Punjab’s wheat arrivals register 22 lakh tonnes yearly increase so far
Wheat arrivals in the mandis of Punjab on Wednesday touched 123.68 lakh tonnes against last year’s corresponding arrivals of 102.3 lakh tonnes.
Wheat arrivals in the mandis of Punjab on Wednesday touched 123.68 lakh tonnes against last year’s corresponding arrivals of 102.3 lakh tonnes. The arrivals this year are 21.28 lakh tonnes more than the last year’s, an increase of 21%.
“We are expecting daily arrivals to continue for at least week to ten days more, and every day we expect about 40,000 to 50,000 tonnes. The arrivals on Wednesday were 47,000 tonnes,” said a deputy general manager rank officer in the state agricultural marketing board (Mandi Board).
As per a daily arrivals update, the arrivals continue from Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Amirtsar, Tarn Taran, Fazilka, Muktsar, while districts such as Pathankot, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Barnala, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Mohali are witnessing negligible arrivals.
“If this trend continues 5 lakh tonnes of more wheat will arrive, which will take the total to 128 lakh tonnes against last year’s arrivals of 104 lakh tonnes, an increase of 23%,” said the Mandi Board official.
According to the agriculture department, total production wheat in the state is expected to touch 166 lakh tonnes and the last year’s production was 148 lakh tonnes.
“We expecting a bumper crop with a total grain yield of 180 lakh tonnes but due to rainfall and high-speed winds at a stage when crop was at maturing stage led to lodging of crop leading to fall in yield which means a loss of 9%,”
The state saw highest yield of 182.57 lakh tonnes in 2018 when per hectare yield was 51.88 quintal, which as per the crop cutting experiments this season is 47.5 quintals.
