The Republican Party of India (RPI) has fielded jailed gangster Chhota Rajan’s brother as the party’s candidate from Phaltan Assembly seat for the upcoming elections scheduled to take place on October 21.

Deepak Nikalje’s candidature was announced by party chief and union minister Ramdas Athawale on Wednesday. Athawale said, “RPI will contest on six seats from Maharashtra including Phaltan, Malshiraj, Bhandara, Naigaon, Pathri and Mankhurd-Shivajinagar.”

This is not the first time that Deepak Nikalje is contesting the polls. Earlier, he had unsuccessfully contested Assembly elections from the Chembur Assembly seat in Mumbai. This time, however, Chembur has now gone to the Shiv Sena under the seat-sharing agreement with the BJP.

Instead of Chembur, RPI has this time got Phaltan from where Nikalje will now be contesting.

Deepak Nikalje also has multiple cases against him at various police stations in Mumbai. During 2014 polls, he had declared assets worth 17 crore.
