Police booked the victim’s boyfriend for rape since he allegedly established physical relations with her despite her being a minor

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by four people in a park in Delhi’s Rohini, Sector 28, under the jurisdiction of outer-north Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy, in the early hours of Tuesday, the Delhi Police said on Thursday.

Police said they nabbed three people involved in the assault, adding that the suspects were locals from the area aged between 15 and 20. While two of the apprehended suspects were adults, one is a minor. (Representational Image)

Police said they nabbed three people involved in the assault, adding that the suspects were locals from the area aged between 15 and 20. While two of the apprehended suspects were adults, one was a minor. A fourth person is at large, and the police have not been able to establish if he was a minor.

This apart, police also apprehended two other minor boys who were not directly involved in the crime but had allegedly witnessed the sexual assault being perpetrated by their four friends and did not inform the police.

Ravi Kumar Singh, deputy commissioner of police (outer north), identified the nabbed suspects as 20-year-old Rahul and 19-year-old Bobby, apart from the minors. “We also apprehended a minor involved in the sexual assault, and have identified a fourth suspect who is on the run,” police said.

Additionally, police booked the victim’s boyfriend for rape since he allegedly had a sexual relationship with her despite her being a minor, police said.

According to the police, the incident happened around 1.30 on Tuesday morning.

“Around 1.30am, the couple met in a park where the man established physical relations with her despite knowing she was a minor,” an officer probing the case said, requesting anonymity. The park was not maintained, had overgrown plants, and was secluded. It was neither gated nor had security guards, the officer added.

According to the statement of a police officer who responded to the victim’s call for help, the girl was “very frightened” after the crime and not in a position to immediately record her statement. However, she was physically safe and was being counselled by psychologists, said a second officer associated with the probe.

The girl lives with her parents and siblings in Shahbad Dairy and was in a relationship with a 20-year-old man who works as a painter.

The couple was leaving the park when the six suspects walked in and found them together. The girl, in her statement to the police, said that they came across as intoxicated at the time of the crime. The suspects allegedly beat the girl’s boyfriend, causing him to abandon the girl and flee the scene. The girl also alleged that the three to four people took turns raping her. “Her boyfriend ran away leaving her at the crime scene after being thrashed by the suspects. He is absconding and a search is on for him. We will arrest him as well,” the first officer said.

Once the suspects left the scene, the girl met a passerby and requested him to call the police, after which a team reached the scene to take her for a medical examination.

A case of gang rape, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal act done by several persons, and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act was registered. The girl said she would be able to identify the suspects if they were produced before her, the above quoted officer said.

“The description of the suspects suggested that they could be locals. So, women police personnel discreetly took the victim around to a neighbourhood where the accused were suspected to be living. One of the suspects, Bobby, was seen on the streets and pointed out to us by the victim. He was immediately apprehended,” said the officer.

Bobby’s interrogation led the police to the rest of the five suspects who were either allegedly involved in the gang rape or were at the scene of the crime.

Once the sequence of the crime was established, the police added Section 21 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act and apprehended two minors.

“They both were not involved in the assault but witnessed their friends in the crime. Since they did not inform the authorities about the sexual assault against a minor, they have been booked and apprehended,” said the DCP.

Police said that the suspects were school dropouts and drug abusers. “They are school dropouts and drug abusers or alcoholics. They are either unemployed or work odd jobs,” said the officer.
