Delhi news: There are around 93,00 autos and 80,000 taxis in the national capital region.

Auto-rickshaw and taxi (black and yellow top) fares in Delhi have been increased per a January 9 notification issued by the national capital's Transport Department.

According to the notification auto-rickshaw fare for the first 1.5 km has been increased from 25 to 30, with per km fare thereafter increased from 9.5 to 11. Night charges - trips between 11 pm and 5 am - will be an extra 25 per cent of fare. Waiting charges will be 75 paise for every minute in traffic. Luggage - not including 'shopping bag' or 'small suitcase' - will be 10 per piece.

Taxi fares have been increased from 25 to 40 for the first kilometre, with per km rates for AC taxis revised from 16 to 20 and for non-AC taxis from 14 to 17. For taxis (AC and non-AC) night charges are the same as auto-rickshaws, with waiting charges set at 1 per minute and luggage charges (with same exceptions) at 15 per piece.

A hike in fares has been a long-standing demand of the unions.

The last revision to auto fares was in 2020, while fares for taxis (black-and-yellow, economy and premium) was in 2013.

In October Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot said, "Increased cost of CNG led autos and taxis to drive fewer kilometres, which impacted supply. Revised fares will help them support families and provide convenience to passengers."

There are around 93,00 autos and 80,000 taxis in Delhi. This excludes cab aggregators like Ola and Uber, which do not come under the city scheme.

They are, therefore, not bound to follow these fares. In April, Uber hiked fares in the national capital by 12 per cent, citing fuel prices and drivers' demands.
