The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued notices to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and district administration over allegations of illegal and large-scale groundwater extraction in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh.

In an order dated April 13, a bench headed by NGT chairperson justice Prakash Shrivastava issued notices, acting on a plea filed by a local alleging illegal groundwater extraction being carried out for commercial purposes in a plot in Pankaj Garden, Najafgarh.
The bench said the counsel for the applicant has submitted that a complaint dated September 6, 2025 was made to the DJB which found that the borewell was being operated illegally.
“In another communication dated October 13, 2025, it requested the SDM, Sector-10, Dwarka, to seal the illegal borewell, however, no action has been taken,” the bench noted, further taking on record a photograph filed by the applicant showing DJB itself extracting water.
“It is alleged that there is collusion and inaction on the part of the authorities..” the bench noted, issuing notices seeking a response. The NGT will hear the matter on July 10.
