Over 7 million saplings to be planted in Delhi: Sirsa

Delhi plans to plant 7 million saplings in 2026-27 as part of its Green Action Plan, aiming to enhance green cover and reduce pollution.

The Delhi government plans to plant over 7,000,000 saplings in the Capital in 2026-27 as part of the state Green Action Plan (GAP), said Delhi environment minister Majinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday.

“Our government is deploying a strategy not just to control pollution but to increase Delhi’s green cover,” said Sirsa.

He added that the government carried out a similar massive plantation drive with the help of students, citizens, bureaucrats, politicians, judges, dignitaries, ambassadors, among others.

“This aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ campaign for a greener India,” he said.

According to the target, Sirsa said, the forest department will be the nodal agency to coordinate plantation and will plant 2,700,000 saplings. the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will plant a 1,000,000 saplings, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will plant 500,000, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) 505,000, the Public Works Department (PWD) will plant 300,000 and the education department through schools 350,000 saplings. Other agencies involved include NTPC (70,000), DSIIDC (20,965), Delhi Jal Board (20,600), BSES Rajdhani (47,411), CPWD (30,000) and Northern Railways (23,000), among others.

“Additionally, over 1,200,000 plants will be distributed for free through the forest department, DPGS and DMRC,” an official said.
