A Delhi Police constable has been arrested for misappropriating funds to the tune of Rs 19.44 lakh.

The constable, Anil Kumar, allegedly fraudulently transferred the house rent allowance (HRA) arrears of his colleagues to his wife’s bank account, the police said on Wednesday.

According to Suvashish Choudhary, additional commissioner of police (economic offences wing), the constable was posted in the accounts branch located in the Pitampura police lines of outer police district and used his position and knowledge of the financial system to misappropriate the money.

The officer said that they were now trying to figure if more police personnel were involved in the fraud and if there were more financial irregularities committed by the arrested constable, Anil Kumar.

According to A Koan, DCP (outer district), the alleged fraud came to light on Monday after the police received a tip-off. “We conducted our probe and found Kumar to be responsible for the misappropriation of the funds. We questioned him as part of our initial probe before handing him over to the EOW,” said Koan.

Both Koan and Choudhary, however, denied reports that the EOW had conducted a surprise raid at the DCP’s office and arrested Kumar. They also denied that any other police personnel escaped during the EOW team’s ‘raid’ at the DCP office on Tuesday.

On receiving the complaint from the DCP’s office, the EOW registered a case of cheating, criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy.

“We arrested him on Wednesday after our investigation confirmed the fraud. He had duped at least 24 constables of their HRA arrears,” said Choudhary.

Choudhary said that Kumar took advantage of the fact that he was one of the officers who dealt with the distribution of the salaries of policemen. “He knew how the system functioned and gave electronic clearing service (ECS) instructions to the bank to transfer the money to his wife’s account,” said the officer.

He said that the role of his wife was being probed.
