Police said the car driver escaped after leaving his Uttar Pradesh registered vehicle at the spot.

Police said that all the six victims were on their way to Mayapuri in Delhi from Bhora Kalan, when the accident took place at about 10.40pm.

Investigators said the deceased was driving the auto and he was rushed to a government hospital in Sector 10A after being extricated from the mangled remains of the three-wheeler, but doctors declared him dead.

The deceased was identified as Tara Chand (55).

Police said the injured persons have been identified as Krishna Devi (52), her sister-in-law Shushila Devi (50), Sushila’s daughter Meenakshi Kumari (21), and son Monish Kumar (18), and Kumar’s cousin Nitin (20). They said all of them were rushed to a private hospital in Sector 14 but later shifted to the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi.

Police added that Krishna, wife of the deceased, is still undergoing treatment as her condition is serious, while the rest have been discharged from the hospital.

Om Prakash (48), Shushila’s brother, said Meenakshi’s marriage has been fixed on February 15. He said they had come to his residence in Bhora Kalan on Sunday evening. “I had asked them to leave on Monday morning but Chand insisted on returning after dinner. I received a call about the accident an hour after they left,” he said.

Sub-inspector Manoj Kumar, additional station house officer of Civil Lines police station, said the car driver will be arrested soon.

On Monish’s complaint, an FIR was registered against the car driver under Section 279 (rash driving or riding on public way), 304A (causing death by negligence) and 337 (acting rashly or negligently as to endanger human life or public safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Civil Lines police station on Monday, police said.

Traffic police officers said that no autorickshaws or two-wheelers are allowed on the Delhi-Gurugram carriageway, but rules are flouted.

“We have increased enforcement and intensity of fines in the last one year,” a senior traffic police officer said.
