Residents clash over dispute about feeding stray dogs in Sec 67 society

A clash erupted between two groups of women in Sector 67 over feeding stray dogs, leading to police intervention and ongoing investigations.

Two groups of women clashed over a dispute about feeding stray dogs in their society in Sector 67 on Thursday night, police said on Friday.

Police said both parties submitted cross-complaints at Sector 65 police station, and an investigation has been launched.

Five women residents were involved in feeding a large number of stray dogs inside the society’s premises. However, another group of residents protested, saying feeding should be carried out in an earmarked area, police said.

On Thursday, the two sides disputed the issue, and a police team recorded statements from both sides and asked them to maintain peace.

However, within an hour, both sides clashed, with at least six to seven women of a group allegedly assaulting two women involved in feeding.

A video of the incident has also surfaced on social media in which women could be seen assaulting. HT couldn’t independently verify the video’s authenticity.

Rose Sood, a resident, alleged that the society’s estate manager has demarcated a feeding area. “We feed the strays there. However, several people still have issues. They assaulted me and my friend Ankita,” she alleged.

Devika Sharma, another resident, alleged that those protesting have smashed the feeding bowls and are trying to relocate the dogs. “They have abused and threatened us in the past. Rose and I have submitted multiple police complaints, including one on August 8,” she alleged.

Sunil Rajput, a resident, said the dogs keep barking all night, disturbing everyone’s sleep.

“We checked CCTV to realise that these women were feeding them clandestinely at night near entrances of apartments instead of a secluded and demarcated area. Dog bites have injured several residents, but they don’t listen. It resulted in the clash. Now, we are receiving threat calls from unknown numbers,” he alleged.

Anjali Singh, another resident, said feeding dogs near the entrance of towers and houses and below cars is the root cause of the problem. “Feeding is being done with the help of NGOs, but residents are facing the problem,” she alleged.

“Those involved in feeding were asked multiple times not to feed strays near entrances or cars, but they didn’t listen. Now the condition is such that we can’t even sleep at night due to continuous barking of a large number of strays in the society,” she alleged.

Sandeep Turan, PRO of Gurugram Police said police are looking into the matter. “None of the women sustained any injuries. MCG will be roped in for help if required. We have taken a complaint from both sides, and necessary action will be taken as per law,” he added.
