U.P. civic polls: 13 in the fray for Aligarh mayor’s post
Six flying squads and 10 stationary surveillance teams are being deployed to keep an eye on campaigning to ensure compliance with directives issued by the state election commission
Thirteen candidates are in fray for the post of mayor in Aligarh where the civic polls will be held in the second phase on May 11. Two candidates Rakshpal Singh and Aga Mohammad Yunus, who were both independents, withdrew their names on Thursday while nomination paper of one other was rejected during scrutiny. In all, 16 candidates had filed their papers to contest for the mayor’s post in Aligarh.
Meanwhile, Aligarh district election officer Indra Vikram Singh presided over a meeting held on April 27 to ensure free, fair and smooth election process in the district. Singh directed video and surveillance teams to maintain a vigil.
“Cash of more than 2 lakh will be seized if no documentary support is shown about it. Candidates should ensure spending within permissible limits because records reflecting expenditure during election campaign will be tallied after election gets over,” Singh said.
“Six flying squads and 10 stationary surveillance teams are being deployed to keep an eye on campaigning to ensure compliance with directives issued by the state election commission,” he said. Singh further said the expenditure limit for a mayoral candidate was ₹40 lakh while was ₹3 lakh for a candidate for a corporator’s post.
A candidate for the post of chairperson of nagar palika can spend ₹9 lakh while a candidate for nagar palika corporator can spend ₹2 lakh. A candidate aspiring to be a nagar panchayat chairperson can spend ₹2.50 lakh while a candidate contesting for member, nagar panchayat, can spend maximum ₹50,000, the Aligarh district election officer said.
