U.P.: Scholarships to students studying Sanskrit in schools, colleges soon

With an aim of promoting learning of Sanskrit language in the state, a proposal has been sent to the Yogi government to provide scholarship/stipend worth ₹131 crore from the state budget to all the students studying the subject in government-run, unaided and self-financed Sanskrit schools and colleges running across Uttar Pradesh.
The proposal has been sent on behalf of director, secondary education, Mahendra Dev. The scholarship would be given to all the students, right from Class 6 to postgraduate level, said a senior state education department official aware of the development.
At present, students studying Sanskrit in any institution in the state are provided with the scholarship of only ₹50 to 120 per month. Not only is the amount given as scholarship meagre, it is not given to all students. As per the present practice, scholarship is given to 125 students of Purva Madhyama (Class 9 and 10), 90 of Uttar Madhyama (Class 11 and 12), 48 of Shastri (graduation) and only 25 of Acharya (postgraduate) level in the entire state.
However, according to the plans of the Yogi government, there is a proposal to increase the scholarship for the purpose of encouraging the students to study Sanskrit. Now, all the students will also be provided with a stipend/scholarship which would range from ₹300 to ₹2100, as per the percentage of marks and course a student is pursuing, say officials.
For example, students getting 33% to 45% marks at Prathama level (Class 6 to 8) will be given a stipend of ₹300 per month while ₹325 would be given to those getting 45% to 60% and ₹350 to those securing 60 % or more. Officials said the proposal was actually sought from the government itself for these scholarships and so it was expected to be approved soon.
There is also a proposal to give scholarships only to those who get more than 60% marks in Shastri (undergraduate) and Acharya (postgraduate) levels. Students living in the hostel from Prathama to Uttar Madhyama will get ₹1,800 per month while students of Shastri, Acharya and Shiksha Shastri level will get ₹3,000 per month, the officials said citing the proposal sent to the state government, a copy of which is with HT.
The proposal includes 12,696 students of Pratham (Class 6, 7 and 8) level who would be given monthly stipend of ₹300 to 350 (based on the percentage of marks).
Likewise, for Purv Madhyamik (Classes 9 and 10), a total of 41,578 students would be paid stipend of ₹500 to 550. For Uttar Madhyama (Classes 11 and 12), another 45,307 students will be getting a monthly amount of ₹600 to 650.
For Shastri (undergraduate course), 16,191 students would be given the monthly scholarship of ₹900, for Acharya (postgraduate) around 5,801 students would be given ₹1100 per month.
For the students of residential schools, those in Pratham, Purva and Uttar Madhyama, there are 14,712 students and each will be given ₹1800 per month. For Shastri, Acharya and Shiksha Shastri, an amount of ₹2,090 to 3,000 would be given per month.
