Surya had been undergoing treatment for chronic renal and hepatic compromise after falling ill on May 14. The leopard was brought to SGNP from the Ahilyanagar Forest Division in 2018 as a two-month-old cub and was hand-reared at the park.

According to SGNP officials, Surya’s condition deteriorated despite medical treatment and supportive care. In a statement, the park administration said wild animals often show very few visible symptoms until diseases reach an advanced stage.

SGNP currently houses 22 leopards, 12 tigers and eight lions.
