A 24-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly posing as a CBI officer and checking the identity documents of those staying in a Ghatkopar hotel. According to the police, Deepak Chandrasen More was drunk and his intention was to extort money from the hotel staff on finding some minor guest.

The incident occurred around 3.30 pm when More, a resident of Lallubhai Compound in Mankhurd, walked into a hotel opposite the railway station. He showed a fake CBI identity card to the receptionist and asked for the customer register. Later, he entered each room and checked the identity papers of guests, police inspector Pramod Kokate of Ghatkopar police station said.

Finding it suspicious, some customers complained to the hotel staff and the police were informed. A patrolling van reached the hotel and it was found that his identity card was bogus, Kokate said. More was brought to the police station and arrested for impersonation.

More was booked under sections 170 (impersonating a public servant) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code. He was produced before a metropolitan magistrate court which remanded him in 14-day judicial custody.

Police sub inspector Dnyaneshwar Kharmate said the accused might have extorted money using this modus operandi in the past. “We are questioning him.”
