Noida traffic police officers on Thursday conducted an inspection of the Model Town roundabout near Sector 62, which sees heavy traffic every morning and evening because it is the main intersection between Noida and Ghaziabad, connecting the two busy areas of Noida’s sectors 62 and 63 with Ghaziabad’s Indirapuram. The traffic police intend to prepare a decongestion plan for the roundabout area, which will essentially be a set of suggestions they will make to the Noida authority.

Officers aware of the matter expect the plan to be ready by next week.

“Because of the sheer traffic volume between Noida and Ghaziabad, this intersection is one of our most congested. A large number of factory and industrial workers, as well as corporate employees, travel between these two locations. As a result, the area is always crowded during morning peak hours beginning at 8 am and evening peak hours beginning at 5-7 pm,” said Anil Yadav, deputy commissioner of police. (traffic).

Traffic officers say the absence of a designated pedestrian crossing is a significant concern at this location. Due to the many pedestrians crossing from all sides, high-speed traffic of cars, autos, and e-rickshaws must slow down, contributing to the slow traffic movement.

“The area has a high volume of pedestrian traffic, but the corresponding arrangements are insufficient. So, we will write to the Noida authority soon to discuss the creation of pedestrian islands, zones, or footpaths. In addition, we must manage traffic to stop vehicles so pedestrians can cross periodically,” said DCP Yadav.

Furthermore, traffic officers may test a route plan in which autos and e-rickshaws cannot reach the intersection while travelling from Sectors 62 and 63 towards Ghaziabad. Instead, these vehicles must turn left or U-turn before the intersection from near the ABS crossing.

Officers have demarcated lanes to create a makeshift parking area for autos and e-rickshaws. During peak hours, however, there is frequent spillover on the main carriageway, and automobiles also occupy much road space.

According to traffic officials, the Model Town intersection, the Chilla border with Delhi and the Parthala Chowk intersection, are clogged due to high traffic volumes, and these stretches will soon reach their carrying capacity.

“We might have to eventually enlarge all these intersections or build a flyover to allow at least some of the crowd to bypass the intersection,” Yadav said.

While the Parthala Chowk flyover is nearing completion, construction will begin soon on the Chilla flyover. Meanwhile, Model Town has an underpass, but the government has not proposed significant widening or flyover plans.
