The authority started work on the ITMS project in July, 2021 to put the city’s key roads and traffic intersections under e-surveillance in a bid to streamline traffic management.

A budget of 64.49 crore has been allocated for the project and the authority will put 84 traffic intersections under e-surveillance with a total of 1,065 cameras, which will be monitored by a control room. The control room will be set up in Sector 94, the officials said.

The authority will also install 40 adaptive traffic control units, 18 speed detection devices, 22 variable message signboards and 693 automatic number plate reader cameras, among other equipment.

“So far, we have completed 52% work on this project and we have a deadline of April 15 to make it fully functional. It will help the traffic police act swiftly against the violators and improve traffic management significantly,” said SP Singh, deputy general manager of the Noida authority, heading the traffic cell.

The project was supposed to be completed by January, 2022. But the new deadline has been fixed for April 15 as the work got delayed on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, the officials said.

The authority will make the control room functional by March and connect at least 50 traffic intersections, while the remaining intersections will be connected before April 15.

“Once completed, we will coordinate with the authority and issue e-challans for violating traffic rules such as speeding, red light jumping, lane violation and other cases with the help of the ITMS. Commuters who violate traffic will be provided with electronic evidence of their violations. We will also be able to issue traffic alerts to commuters during peak hours as we will be having live footage of all pockets of the city with the help of e-surveillance,” said Ganesh Saha, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Gautam Budh Nagar.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already directed that the e-surveillance project should be implemented with proper monitoring of the traffic department so that it helps enforce rules and improve the entire traffic management system.

“The government wants to reduce traffic congestion and make roads safer with the proper enforcement of traffic norms. To make that happen, the police and respective agencies such as the Noida authority will work together,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.
