The police identified the suspect as Bijendra Kumar, a resident of Meerut. He got married to the woman on November 30 last year. She was found dead at her parents’ home in Ghaziabad’s Nandgram on the night of March 22 and police were informed.

Police said the autopsy confirmed strangulation and after investigation Kumar was arrested. They said the relation between the suspect and his wife soured soon after their marriage.

“Kumar, during interrogation, told police that his wife was pregnant at the time of their arranged marriage and he got her to terminate the pregnancy. He told police that in December 2022, he sent his wife to her parents’ house in Ghaziabad. Thereafter, the woman again became pregnant while staying for two months at her parents’ house. He said he again got her to terminate the pregnancy. It later came to fore that she was friendly with another man. After the multiple pregnancies, Kumar realised that she was having an affair,” said a police investigator attached to the case.

On March 19, Kumar’s wife went to visit her parents again as her uncle died in Shajahanpur and the family was to proceed there.

“Kumar told us that on March 21, his father died in Meerut and he asked his wife to return home but she refused saying she was in Shahjahanpur at her uncle’s house. Bijendra got suspicious and came to Ghaziabad. He found his wife there while the rest of the household had gone to Shajahanpur. There, they both had an argument during which he allegedly used her dupatta to strangle her. The autopsy confirmed the cause of death as strangulation,” said Nipun Agarwal, deputy commissioner of police (city).

The police said they came across several CCTV footages in which a man was seen near the house in Nandgram and he later turned out to be Kumar.

“Based on CCTV footage and electronic surveillance, the suspect was nabbed. He told us in detail about how how and why he killed her,” the DCP said.

The suspect was booked for murder at the Nandgram police station.
