Bank robbery in Mumbai: Assistant manager killed, clerk injured; former employee held

An assistant bank manager was killed and a cashier was injured, as they gave a brave fight to two armed men, who tried to rob the ICICI branch at Virar (East) on Thursday.
According to Virar police, the incident took place at 8.45pm, when the bank was half shuttered, with just the two women – Yogita Vartak-Chowdhary, the assistant manager, and cashier Shraddha Devrukh – inside.
“The accused entered the bank, headed straight to the locker and threatened the women with knives to open the safe. When they protested, the accused slashed them on the neck, chest and shoulder with razors. They escaped with two bags containing gold and cash,” said senior inspector Suresh Warade.
Local residents chased the duo and caught one of them, Anil Dubey, who was an ex-employee of the bank and worked for 15 years, and now he is manager of Axis Bank,Naigaon branch. The other accused is absconding.
At the time of going to press, the police were in the process of filing a first information report (FIR). Vartak-Chowdhary died on the spot, while Devrukh is undergoing treatment at Sanjeevani Hospital. “We will check the CCTV footage of the bank and vicinity,” said Warade.

Ludhiana: 4 of family arrested for slum dweller’s murder
A day after a 35-year-old slum dweller was murdered in Dhandhari, police arrested four members of a family on Tuesday. The accused have been identified as Mohit Lal of Madhya Pradesh, his two sons Sajnay and Sipahi Lal, brother Rajan and another relative Shyam Kumar. Station house officer at Sahnewal police station, Inspector Pawan Kumar, said that they were arrested from the Kanaich Bus stand when they were trying to escape from the city.

Survey of bulk waste generators by Pune civic body raises confusion among officials, residents
Pune: To effectively deal with 744 million litres per day of sewage generated within civic limits, Pune Municipal Corporation has begun a survey to cover housing societies and deal with garbage disposal at source. PMC solid waste management department, head, Asha Raut, said, “The survey of bulk waste generation covering housing societies having more than 150 flats has started across the city. We will take action against societies not treating sewage on their premises.”
