Lucknow: In an attempt to improve the solid waste management in Lucknow, the city’s civic authority has decided to order the bulk waste producers to segregate their wet waste from dry garbage. Municipal commissioner Indrajeet Singh has said that bulk producers of waste in Lucknow generate at least 100 kg of garbage per day on average and thus, they would be mandated to install composters in their premises to treat the wet waste produced by them.

According to the officer, bulk waste producers include -- occupiers of house(s)/flat(s), group of houses/flats, housing society(s) , complex(es), restaurant(s), hotel(s), market(s), industrial estate(s), shopping complex(s)/mall(s), hostel(s), hotel(s), other commercial establishment(s), places of worship, stadium and sports complexes, clubs, gyms, marriage halls, and recreation/entertainment complexes.

In addition, buildings occupied by central government ministries, departments or undertakings, state government departments or undertakings, local bodies, public sector undertakings, private companies, hospital(s), nursing home(s), school(s), college(s), and other educational institutions can also be bulk waste producers.

Singh added, “These bulk waste producers would be sent a notice asking them to install composters with a capacity to treat wet waste in the range of 200 kg to 5 tonnes. A number of gated colonies and government establishments like SSB have already agreed to set up composters for treating wet waste.”

The civic commissioner further said that garden and horticultural waste -- including grass & wood clippings, weeds, branches, twigs, straw, dead leaves, and tree trimmings, among others -- collected from parks, gardens, and other places would be used to produce compost (fertilisers). “Pits to prepare such compost are already being dug up at many gardens that are maintained by the LMC,” said the officer.

Separately, material recovery facilities are being set up in all zones of the LMC. “Before processing the waste, garbage pickers, informal recyclers, and other sanitary workers would recover all recyclable items from the pile,” added Singh. Besides, the LMC would also start a drive to get feedback from city residents on how to improve Lucknow’s in the Swachh Survey index.
