The incident took place near Counter Terrorism and Jungle Warfare (CTJW) college under the Kanker police station’s jurisdiction on Saturday, the police said.
The deceased were identified as Tapan Sarkar (57), Reeta Sarkar (50), Vishwajeet Adhikari (42) and Hajari Lal Dali (67), all residents of Odisha.
Inspector general of police (Bastar Range) Sunderaj P said the victims were returning from Kanker after attending a wedding on Saturday when they went missing.
On Sunday, their family members lodged a missing complaint.
“Based on the last locations of the victims’ mobile phones, the police intensified the search and eventually recovered the bodies from the well. Prima facie it appears that the victims’ car lost control and fell into the well along the national highway close to CTJW college and the passengers might have drowned to death,” the IG said.
Autopsies and detailed investigation will be carried out to find out the exact cause of the accident.
“A case has been registered and the police are investigating the case from all angles,” Sundaraj said.
