IPS officer Rameshwar Singh Thakur appointed chairman of HPPSC

Rameshwar Singh Thakur, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer currently posted as IG CID (Vigilance), was on Thursday appointed the chairman of Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC).

Born in a poor family at village Lohali in Shimla in 1964, Thakur was raised by his maternal aunt after his mother died when he was only two years of age.
He did his schooling from Government High School Ghanahatti where his uncle found it difficult to fund his higher education.
However, Thakur got a scholarship and did his BA (Honours) from Government College, Sanjauli.
Thakur was in MA (Economics) 1st year at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla when he was selected to the short service commission (SSC) in Indian Army and joined OTA in 1985 where he secured 7th rank.

He was commissioned into the Infantry Battalion and served there from 1986 till 1991 and took part in many anti-militancy operations in Kashmir valley.
His family circumstances forced him to quit the Army.
He was into farming for three years and also served as security officer at IDBI bank before joining Himachal Pradesh Police Service (HPPS) in 1994.
As a trainee police officer in the Punjab Police Academy, Thakur broke a 103-year record of the Academy by securing all the 3 awards of ‘Best in Indoor’, ‘Best in Outdoor’ and the ‘All Round Best Officer’.
He served as deputy superintendent of police Paonta Sahib and Salooni and additional SP Sirmour.
In 2001, he was selected for the Special Protection Group” (SPG) and served there till 2010.
On his return from SPG, he worked as SP, Crime Branch and SP Sirmour.
He was adjudged the best SP in the state by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
He also served in the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) for seven years.
Back from WCCB, he was posted as DIG, CID– Narcotics and was instrumental in strengthening the newly created narcotics unit in the state.
On promotion as Inspector General, was posted to State Vigilance & Anti-Corruption Bureau and currently was serving as IG, CID (Vigilance).
The state government also issued notification for filling up three vacant posts of members of the commission.
The appointed members are IAS officer Rakesh Sharma, colonel (Retd) Rajesh Sharma and Prof (Retd) Nain Singh.
The appointments come a week after the controversy over appointment of sitting member Rachna Gupta as the HPPSC chairperson.
Her swearing-in ceremony was cancelled at the last moment and later she declined to join the post citing personal reasons.
