Pratapgarh trader shot at for refusing to pay extortion money

A trader was shot at by miscreants in the Raniganj Bazar area of Pratapgarh on Sunday night for allegedly not giving extortion money. The trader was rushed to a local hospital, where the doctors referred him to SRN hospital in Prayagraj. Enraged over the incident, traders in Raniganj staged a protest demanding immediate action against the culprits.

According to reports, a resident of Bhagipur village, Ashok Kumar Maurya, runs an electronic goods shop in Raniganj Bazar. Ashok received a call around 10 days back on his mobile wherein the unidentified callers demanded 5 lakh as extortion money from him.

Ashok submitted a complaint to the police, but no action was taken, his kin alleged.

On Sunday night at around 8 pm, Ashok was at his shop when two miscreants on a bike opened fire on him. Ashok received a bullet injury in his leg but ran for safety. The miscreants fled on their bike. Ashok was taken to a local hospital, where doctors referred him to SRN hospital in Prayagraj.

Meanwhile, traders in the Raniganj area staged a protest and blocked the main road for about two hours. They said that despite being informed about the extortion call, police took no action against the culprits.

SHO of Raniganj police station Sarvesh Singh said an FIR has been lodged in this connection, and efforts were on to trace the miscreants.
