Crackdown on U.P. mafia - Two criminals held, 14 out of reach of police: Report
U.P. police crack down on mafiosi and their associates, slapping Gangsters' Act against them and seizing their properties. Two associates of Vinod Upadhyay were arrested.
The U.P. police have launched a crackdown on mafiosi and their henchmen who have been eluding the police for long now. Slapping Gangsters’ Act against them and attaching their properties began on Thursday.
Two close associates – Deepak Yadav and Kamla Kant – of Gorakhpur-based mafioso Vinod Upadhyay were arrested on Thursday evening by the police before they could surrender in court.
On April 14, Sanjeev Gupta, IG, law and order, had issued a circular to all police heads of various districts and had sought a report about police action taken against the mafia. In the report submitted on April 21, it came to light that 14 mafiosi in Uttar Pradesh had been evading arrest and no action had been taken against them. These mafiosi included Vinod Upadhyay of Gorakhpur and Sanjeev alias Ramu Dwivedi of Deoria. Meanwhile, two other mafiosi of the district, Rajan Tiwari and Sudheer Singh, had their property seized.
The other mafiosi who are still at large, and no strong action has been taken against them in the last one year, include Abhishek Singh, Subhash Singh and Birjesh Singh of Varanasi, Tribhuwan Singh of Ghazipur and Rajesh Yadav of Prayagraj.
