Chandni Chowk flyover to miss May 1 inauguration deadline
Work on some ramps, underpasses and flyover bridges is still going on and will take at least a month to be completed
The multilevel flyover at Chandni Chowk will not be able to be inaugurated on the occasion of Maharashtra Day on May 1 as the work on some ramps, underpasses and flyover bridges is still going on and will take at least a month to be completed. Earlier last month, union minister of road transport Nitin Gadkari had announced inauguration of the multilevel flyover on May 1.
According to the information shared by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the girders required for building the bridge connecting NDA Road to Bavdhan at Chandni Chowk are ready. Installation of these girders will start in the next few days. A 150-metre-long and 32-metre-wide bridge will be constructed through nine girders on this stretch. While 80% of ramp number 3 and ramp number 7 connecting this bridge have been completed. The remaining work will be carried out after the bridge is built and ready. While several underpasses and eight new ramps have been constructed at two places to avoid traffic congestion at Chandni Chowk, work of the new bridge at the Chowk is going on at a fast clip.
NHAI Pune project director Sanjay Kadam said, “The number of vehicles plying from Mulshi to the Bavdhan side and going towards Warje, Satara is high. Ramp number 6 was constructed for this purpose to reduce the traffic congestion on this route. With the completion of this work, traffic has started from this ramp. The work of most of the ramps has been completed. This will help to reduce traffic congestion to some extent. The work on the new bridge is in progress and the work of erecting the pillars alongside NDA Chowk is in progress. The bridge will be constructed and ready to use in the next couple of months.”
Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde had paid a visit to the Chandni Chowk flyover at the end of August last year and directed that the old bridge be demolished to avoid traffic congestion. Accordingly, the old bridge was demolished using explosives on October 2, 2022 to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.
