Adaptability key as Rinku shines in UP T20 league
Rinku Singh shines in UPT20, scoring 54 off 22 balls, showcasing his power-hitting and leadership, vital for the Meerut Mavericks' success.
Lucknow: Rinku Singh’s career is a reminder that in modern limited-overs cricket, a single opportunity can change a player’s trajectory. For a batter whose hallmark is power under pressure, every match is a chance to reinforce a growing reputation.

Now leading the Meerut Mavericks in the ongoing UPT20 here in Lucknow, Rinku has once again shown why teams trust him to close out games. His unbeaten knock in a rain-affected tie against Lucknow Falcons on Wednesday was not just another cameo, but an illustration of the mindset that has come to define him as alert, intense, and relentlessly intent on scoring.
Rinku’s 22-ball 54, which contained two boundaries and six towering sixes was yet another glimpse of his potential with the willow. The left-hand batter turned the game, striking 19 and 26 runs in consecutive overs to fashion the team’s thrilling five-run win over the Falcons via the DLS method.
With 702 runs in 42 T20 internationals at a strike rate of 156.34 so far, Rinku’s style is recognisably Indian but grounded in the universal language of power hitting. He doesn’t rely solely on slogging; he constructs his innings by finding gaps, using geometry, and stepping out when required.
That combination became even more apparent in the Ranji Trophy last season, where he produced significant knocks that reminded observers he is not only a white-ball specialist. With 3677 runs in 52 Ranji Trophy matches so far, Rinku has demonstrated patience, concentration, and the ability to build an innings—attributes that translate into more assured finishing in the shortest format.
For young players in Uttar Pradesh and beyond, Rinku’s pathway is instructive. He has worked through domestic systems, impressed across formats, and seized opportunities in franchise cricket and for India when presented. Playing for a team like Meerut Mavericks in the UPT20 puts him in front of regional fans who know the local circuits well and expect match-winning contributions.
Reflecting on his captain’s heroics, Kartik Tyagi, who shared the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dressing room with Rinku during the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) and is now playing under his leadership at Meerut Mavericks, detailed what makes the southpaw such a formidable force.
“At the number he bats, the way he performs at the end... if you look across the entire world, he almost comes in the Top 5 batters who come in at this number and dominate the game like this. As long as he is at the crease, we always have the confidence that whatever the situation is, the match can be made for us. He has that confidence, and so do we. As a player, the amount of hard work he has put in, hardly anyone here has done that. The result of that is something he gets, and our team benefits as well,” said Kartik.
Beyond his batting exploits, Tyagi emphasized the aggressive and fearless mindset Rinku instills in the squad as a leader. “Playing under his captaincy gives a lot of confidence. If you look at his attitude, we stay on the ground with this mindset that we just have to dominate. Not just win, but dominate,” he said, adding, “He thinks that way and motivates us like that. Then when we bowl, our expectations from ourselves are also in that way that we have to go out and dominate.”
Meerut Mavericks head coach and former UP speedster Utkarsh Chandra is amazed by Rinku’s fireworks in the league. “Tactically, Rinku’s presence allows team management to plan with more freedom. With a dependable finisher at the tail end of the innings, teams can afford to play aggressive top-order batsmen who lay the platform, knowing Rinku can marshal the chase,” said Chandra on Friday.
“His capability to switch gears in an instant forces opposition bowlers to constantly reassess lengths and plans. There is also a psychological side to being a finisher. Bowlers target finishers with short-pitched or slow deliveries to disrupt rhythm,” he added.
