Aus to shelve annual cricket Tri Series

Australia decide to shelve their annual cricket Triangular Serries, a feature of their season for the past three decades.

Australia will shelve its annual international cricket Tri Series from next season, suspending a competition which has been a fixture of Australian summers for almost 30 years.

Cricket Australia today said it will forego the annual limited overs tournament from the 2008-09 season in favor of head-to-head clashes with traditional rivals. The Tri Series has been a massive drawcard for Australian cricket fans since 1979-80.

Australia will play both South Africa and New Zealand in three tests, five one day matches and possibly one Twenty20 international next year in a new format which rules out the triangular tournament.

This year's Tri Series involving Australia, India and Sri Lanka will be the last of its kind, Cricket Australia said.

Chief executive James Sutherland said scheduling head-to-head series gave Cricket Australia more flexibility with programing. The decision was solely about scheduling and did not indicate th Tri Series had become stale, Sutherland said.
