South Africa Women beat Ireland Women by 15 runs

Commentary

1:23 PM IST Goodbye from here - That wraps up our coverage of this encounter, which saw South Africa lock in a commanding victory. But the warm-up action doesn't stop here! Next up at this very venue, New Zealand Women face off against Bangladesh Women. The build-up is already underway, so switch over to that tab to catch all the live action. Until next time, cheers!
1:21 PM IST Ireland Women's skipper - Gaby Lewis says that the performance was good and they did well with the ball towards the end. She adds that they need to improve on their batting. She adds that South Africa are a really good side and they gave them a tough fight. Ends by saying that they will keep on improving.
1:22 PM IST The skipper of South Africa Women - Laura Wolvaardt says she is very pleased to win the game, and adds that they wanted to get things in order. Admits that they were a bit under-par with the bat, but credits the bowlers for getting the job done. On her batting form, she mentions she is just trying to be positive while batting and is hopeful to continue with the form she is in. Says she is trying to take more responsibility and is playing with that mindset which is working for her very well so far. Wolvaardt says it is awesome to have Shabnim Ismail back in the mix, noting she is bowling really quick and that as captain, she can bank on her four overs to get the job done every single time. On Kapp, she says she has been excellent with both bat and ball and is good to have such experienced players in the team to step up consistently.
1:22 PM IST Time to hear it from the captains...
1:17 PM IST Leah Paul's departure triggered the final slide - The definitive turning point came in the 13th over when the well-set Leah Paul was dismissed for a hard-fought 29. With her departure, Ireland's hopes evaporated as the required run rate quickly went out of reach. The lower order simply had no answers to the scoreboard pressure, and wickets fell in quick succession. Marizanne Kapp returned to clean up, finishing as the clear pick of the bowlers with magnificent figures of 4 wickets, while Nonkululeko Mlaba and Tumi Sekhukhune chipped in with two scalps to seal a comprehensive victory for South Africa.
1:34 PM IST Kapp strikes early - Chasing 136, Ireland's response got off to a catastrophic start against a fired-up South African pace attack. Marizanne Kapp turned the game on its head immediately, dismissing both Irish openers within her first two overs. Things went from bad to worse when speedster Shabnim Ismail removed the dangerous Irish skipper, Gaby Lewis, in the fourth over. Reeling at the top, Ireland found some much-needed resilience in Rebecca Stokell and Leah Paul. Stokell played a gritty cameo of 19, and alongside Alice Tector's quickfire 17, Ireland managed to stage a brief fightback to keep themselves in the contest.
1:34 PM IST A fine win for the Proteas Women! South Africa started brightly under overcast skies, with skipper Laura Wolvaardt looking in pristine touch. She anchored the innings beautifully with a fine half-century, setting up a solid foundation alongside Annerie Dercksen to take the Proteas to a comfortable 113/2. However, the moment Wolvaardt was dismissed, the innings completely fell apart. Ireland used seven different bowlers to claw their way back, led by a spectacular three-wicket haul from Arlene Kelly and two wickets apiece from Ava Canning and Cara Murray. The Irish attack completely choked the scoring, conceding just 21 runs in the last four overs and triggering a massive collapse that restricted South Africa to a disappointing 135 in their 18 overs.

12:50 PM IST Drinks! A three-wicket haul for Kapp and she has really turned the screws on the Irish batters. The partnership between Paul and Alice Tector was budding really nicely for Ireland and somewhat stabilised things up as well, but now that both have been dismissed in a short span, and with two new batters at the crease, South Africa would aim to go for the kill. Ireland Women need 55 runs in 30 balls. It is still achievable, but someone will have to play a responsible role and step up when needed. But who would that be for Ireland? The new batter in is Christina Coulter Reilly. And Nonkululeko Mlaba will bowl after the break.

Marizanne Kapp to Gaby Lewis, 4 runs

FOUR! Exquisite from Lewis! Pitched slightly fuller and just outside the off stump, with a bit of outswing. Gaby Lewis advances down the track, lets the ball curve away from her and lofts it inside out over extra cover for a boundary. Fine shot.

Marizanne Kapp to Amy Hunter, no run

OUT! HIGH UP AND CAUGHT! Kapp strikes once again and Ireland are under pressure already. Full in length, curving away from the batter, on off. Amy Hunter shimmies down the track and perhaps tries to tonk it downtown, but as the ball leaves her, she ends up slicing it in the air over the point fielder. Annerie Dercksen turns around over her right shoulder and runs back a few yards to take a fine catch. Ireland Women are 10/2, needing 127 runs.

Shabnim Ismail to Gaby Lewis, no run

Laser onto the thighs, on a length. Gaby Lewis is cramped up for room. She tries to work it across to the leg side, but gets beaten on the inside edge and is struck just above her right knee roll. That must have stung, given Ismail's pace.

Shabnim Ismail to Amy Hunter, 6 runs

SIX! Audacious! That's some way to greet a bowler like Ismail. In front of the stumps, on a good length. Amy Hunter picks the length early, shuffles outside off, gets down on a knee and scoops it just over deep fine leg for a six.

11:51 AM IST Excellent start from Marizanne Kapp. Shabnim Ismail to share the attack.

Marizanne Kapp to Alana Dalzell, no run

OUT! EDGED AND CAUGHT BEHIND! Kapp draws first blood in the very first over. Not the best of balls she has bowled. It is on a length, wide outside off, there to be put away, actually. Alana Dalzell does try to smash it through point via square cut, but loosely hangs her bat away from the body with no real conviction, and gets an outside edge. The ball dips on the keeper, but Sinalo Jafta does well to dive to her right and scoop it before the ground. Kapp barely appeals and the umpire raises her finger. A golden duck for Alana Dalzell and Ireland are 1/1, chasing 137.
